Wellness – A Head Game, Not A Diet

November 7, 2017

Wellness is not a one-shot deal. There is no vaccine to become well. There is no “one meal and I’m healthy now.”  There isn’t even a diet to get you well.  Wellness is about making lifestyle changes, one habit at a time.

Yes, it is painful to change the habits that got you to wherever you are now.  I won’t lie about that.  Just ask the thousands who have followed my Strike Sugar plan.  Each participant gamely accepted the challenge to go Sugar Free for 4 weeks.  In the beginning there will be headaches, irritability and feelings of WTF am I doing this??!!

Your first days may sound something like this:

DK: I hate that I am always depressed and tired.  And why is my skin so bad? I’m 43 and I have acne!

TR: What’s your diet like?  Do you have much sugar?

DK: Well …. (big hesitation) maybe. I have a triple, triple coffee with triple, triple cream.  Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast and then nothing until I get home from work at 10:00 pm.

TR: That can be difficult for your body. How about we try a sugar detox?

DK: Cool.  I’m not putting any sugar in my coffee from now on!

DK starts the plan and a day or two later this happens …

DK: Tosca you’ve inspired me to stop eating sugar. It’s in everything.  I feel like $+It most of the time. And depressed.

TR: Sugar is the number one depressing food. It robs you of your sparkle and shine.  Your “you-ness.” It’s not a food at all.

DK: Really!! I didn’t know that. Sugar is out. I need to be me.

TR: Imagine what would be possible if we could see you at your highest and best.  Your shiniest self, without sugar in your body.

DK: Ya! No one has seen me at my best. I want to see it for myself.

A few days later …

TR: How are you doing?

DK: I have a huge headache. It’s been 3 days and I feel like hell.  But No sugar! No white bread. No cereal. No candy. No chocolate. Just a big headache.

TR: That is a detox headache.  It will get better, I promise you.  You are doing the hard work.  The headache means your body is responding.  This will pass.

DK: OK. I have a lot to detox. I ate a lot of sugar every day before this.  43 years of it!

Almost one week in ….

DK: 1 more day and it’s been a whole week without sugar.  I’m really doing it. Every day is one more day. I think I’m getting it. The headache is going away.

TR:  You are really doing it!!  There is no going back. You are healing yourself through this. You are removing the veils of darkness and the clouds of sugar that have kept you from being your best.  Keep going. I’m cheering you on and will carry you if you stumble.

A few days later ….

DK: I was so angry on Friday. Then I was depressed on Saturday and Sunday.  Then I started twitching and this morning I work up at 5:00 am soaked in sweat.  I know I am cleansing from sugar but I had no idea!!

TR:  This is your work.  Your body is helping you clear itself.  Allow it.  Go with it. Help it. Hydrate like crazy.  You have no idea of the beauty that will arise from you once you have kicked the sugar habit.  But now we support the body. I’m so proud of you.

DK: Ok. Amazing. I’m definitely feeling better. And my face isn’t oily and full of spots anymore.  No more resistance. I’m going to stick with it and go all the way.

TR: The body is amazing. At this point it might be a good idea to give thanks to your body for its’ amazing healing abilities. I like to practice gratitude for the good things in life – a healthy and healing body is one of those things.

After 4 weeks of Strike Sugar …

TR: Just checking in to see how you are feeling after 4 weeks of avoiding sugar.

DK:  I am joyful.  I can feel joy again. I had not known I was so miserable from sugar.  My skin is clear. My hair is thick and shiny.  My head doesn’t hurt and my legs don’t twitch. I can taste food again.  I have so much energy.  I can’t believe this is me.

This is a true account of one of the participants in the Strike Sugar challenge we just did.  It is remarkable how much we can change for the better with a gradual practicing of new habits.

Try to recognize that wherever you are now, in your physical body, is wherever you are.  Accept where you are right now.  No judgement.  Just acknowledge that, for whatever reason, “it is what it is.”  Then relish the knowledge that you can change your body for the better because your body is ultimately a house of healing.

I will be running another Strike Sugar Challenge in the near future. I’d love to hear your story.  Please share in the comments section below.  Perhaps you will be featured.

Wishing you wellness and happiness,
