Eating Clean® : the Mega Trend That Started Here

Eating Clean® has gone global.  I had been warned of this, when, together Bob and I conceived of the idea to write about this method of eating based on bodybuilding nutrition, more than 15 years ago.  Eating Clean® would become as generic as Kleenex and Oreo cookies”, he predicted.  “Just go ahead and write that book.”

On a cross country flight, in 2006, I did just that, writing the first in a series that would ultimately grow to a suite of thirteen.  It was easy to write about Eating Clean®.  I had restored my own health by losing 84 pounds of obese fat and healing my hypoglycemia and heart issues, following the Eat Clean® principles.

The words flowed as I shared my experience with the page and then with the public.  I wanted women and men to feel they had hope too.  I wanted them to feel that change was possible, achievable and sustainable.  I wrote about what I had done to heal myself, as if I were sitting in their living rooms across from them, sharing my story.

That book, the first book, The Eat-Clean® Diet, hit a nerve. In as little as 2 weeks, all copies in our first print run, sold out.  Clearly 5000 people loved the idea and were the vanguard in a population hungry to learn how to eat well.  The numbers would swell.

Millions of copies and several years later, with books selling globally, Eating Clean® remains a household phrase, describing a lifestyle method of eating that manages weight while restoring wellness.  There are numerous generic versions, which I am reminded, I should take as a compliment.  When people start imitating you, it’s a form of flattery.

I once discovered that someone had been hosting Eating Clean retreats in various locations and that someone was most definitely not me.  There is the Clean Eating publication, for which I once wrote.  There are Lean and Clean bloggers, Eat Clean Lifestyle Instagrammers and even an Eat Clean for Dummies.  I could spend a lot of time and money litigating these, but the beauty of an idea like Eating Clean® is that when it’s a good idea, you can’t stop it from growing.  Let the abundance flow!

When I appeared on Dr. Oz on April 14, 2014 as the Eat Clean expert, Dr. Oz called it the Eat Clean® Revolution, a statement that pushed my brand into the stratosphere.  My website got 9 million hits that day.  I guess you could say, Dr. Oz broke my website.  I’ve been chugging along ever since.

Now the words “eating clean” are used to describe a wide range of  offerings.  My only caution: be sure the principles of Eating Clean® remain pure. I created the lifestyle based on the plan I developed and utilized to heal myself and lose weight.  It is not a fad diet.  It’s a lifestyle.

To refresh your memory …

The Eat Clean® Principles

1.     Eat clean, whole, nutrient dense, well sourced, minimally processed, properly prepared foods. In short, eat from nature.

2.     Combine clean protein + complex carbs + clean fats at every meal.

3.     Eat small meals every 2 ½ to 3 hours of your waking day.

4.     Avoid sugar and refined foods.

5.     Hydrate sufficiently by drinking 3 litres of water per day.

Eating Clean® is a megatrend that appears to have legs.  I am proud to say I have helped millions, including myself, by introducing them to the Big Idea that is, ultimately, a simple idea – to eat whole, natural foods.  Together we have lost weight, restored health and battled depression.  Many have experienced renewed energy levels followed by renewed libido levels (whoopee!).  Many more now experience joy, living in a lean, healthy body and joy, as Bono from U2 has said, “is the ultimate act of defiance.”
