Ten Reasons Why You Should Be Getting More D, Not Less

Short on time? Jump to:

Question: If you knew that there was one, very simple, basic, almost ridiculously easy thing to do to keep you healthy, would you do it?

What if it only took seconds a day?

What if all you had to do was eat something?

What if it could protect you from cancer? Heart disease? Stroke? Diabetes? Hell, all the big ones.

What if it didn’t cost much, tasted good and made you a nicer person?

What if it was safe for babies?

What if it made you sleep better?

Are you curious yet?  You should be. This one little item is a game changer.  It’s tiny but fierce.  It needs to part of your arsenal, especially in the winter and especially if you live north of the 49th parallel.

But don’t listen to me. Listen to the experts. Dr. Akbar Khan and his team of alternative care physicians at Medicor Cancer Centre in Toronto, Ontario, asserts that “Vitamin D is effective in reducing incidence and severity of all cause disease.”  That’s every disease imaginable.  If cancer prevention is your goal, Dr. Khan recommends taking 10,000 IU to as high as 20,000 IU per day.  Vitamin D is a big part of his cancer prevention recommendations.

Dr. L. Ray Matthews, an assistant professor of surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine and the Surgical Critical Care Director at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, states, “You can’t achieve optimal health, athletic performance, or cognitive performance without adequate vitamin D levels.

Both doctors recommend getting Vitamin D levels checked regularly, looking for levels in the 50 to 55 ng/mL range.  Ask for this check every time you have physical and when you have your blood work done.

And now for the 10 reasons you need to take Vitamin D:

  1. Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that directly influences over 200 of some 20,000 to 25,000 human protein-coding genes and notably binds to a number of genes associated with autoimmune disease and cancer.  We need this nutrient for optimal health.
  2. Most North Americans don’t make vitamin D for close to five months of the year. This is why D levels drop in the winter and so many people get sick due to compromised immune systems. Simply by taking 10,000 IU of Vitamin D every day, we can offset this problem.
  3. People experience depression and anxiety, particularly in the winter months. Again, regular dosing of Vitamin D lessens the risk of these conditions developing.
  4. Low vitamin D negatively affects your skeletal system. If you don’t make enough, your bones are not strong and can’t withstand injuries. Low D also makes the bones in the skull soft, increasing the risk of concussion.
  5. Thirty percent of the brain is composed of the omega-3 fatty acid, DHA. Due to poor diet, most North Americans  are deficient in this fatty acid.  The brain is starving for DHA as a result.
  6. Vitamin D can prevent cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia.  Vitamin D is essentially brain food.
  7. Vitamin D deficiency has also been associated with insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. A recent study showed that it was likely to be a major factor in the development of type I diabetes in children.
  8. Some of Vitamin D’s functions are directly anticancer in nature. The vitamin regulates tumor-suppressing proteins and triggers other processes that inhibit cell growth. Vitamin D has also been shown to limit angiogenesis, the process by which a tumor builds a web of blood vessels to nourish itself.
  9. Vitamin D fights against the flu.
  10. Vitamin D boosts immune function.
